Answer Tijuana

Tijuana's name comes from Rancho Tía Juana, a Mexican land grant rancho established in 1829. Since Tía Juana is Spanish for "Aunt Jane", many reasonably assume that the rancho was named for the owner's dear old aunt. Reasonable but, most historians agree, wrong. In fact, the name is derived from the word Tiwan ("by the sea") in Kumeyaay, the language spoken by the indigenous tribes of Baja.
