Prior to the French Revolution, the country's flag was an elaborate affair with the blue shield and gold fleur-de-lis of the royal coat of arms. Naturally, this wouldn't do for the post-King, post-Revolution nation. The new leaders wanted a simpler design that reflected the new values of the nation and adopted the affair the country’s leaders wanted a simpler design that supported the new values of the nation: Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité.
