The first English version of "Angels We Have Heard on High" was written in 1862, paraphrased by James Chadwick. It looks at the angelic announcement of Christ's birth. Who does the Bible - and this carol - say first heard the angelic announcement?

Answer Shepherds

Shepherds heard the announcement of Christ's birth, which occurred in Bethlehem where David lived. He too was a shepherd. Also, Jesus would die as a sacrifice like a lamb that a shepherd watched over. It is believed these shepherds raised the sheep used in the sacrifices at the temple in Jerusalem.
