The Cold War is heating up. A tense standoff between the U.S. and the Soviet Union occurred where in 1962?

Answer Cuba

This 13-day military standoff was probably the closest the Cold War came to nuclear war. In 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis involved a game of chicken between Soviet and U.S. leaders, as the Soviets attempted to install nuclear-armed missiles 90 miles off the U.S. coast in Cuba. President John F. Kennedy spoke to the nation, addressing the naval blockade placed around Cuba, saying, "The path we have chosen for the present is full of hazards, as all paths are--but it is the one most consistent with our character and courage as a nation and our commitments around the world. The cost of freedom is always high--and Americans have always paid it." In the end, a deal was made with Nikita Khrushchev: the removal of the missiles in exchange for no U.S. invasion of Cuba.
