While greeting the public at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, President William McKinley was shot in the stomach by anarchist Leon Czolgosz on September 6, 1901. The public appearance had been removed from the president's schedule twice for fear of attempted assassination, but McKinley wasn't having it. Unfortunately, he died a week later from complications, and his VP Theodore Roosevelt succeeded him.
