The 1968 Summer Olympics were the scene of one of the 20th century's most iconic images: John Carlos and Tommie Smith's black power salute from the medals podium. Where did these Olympics take place?
Answer Mexico City
After receiving their medals for the 200-meter final, Smith and Carlos silently raised their gloved fists and lowered their heads while the National Anthem played. They'd also removed their shoes to protest black poverty and donned scarves and beads to protest lynchings. The men were booed, banned from the Olympics, and fired from their jobs back home for their peaceful protest. Australian Peter Norman was also banned from the Olympics for two years and shamed at home for standing in solidarity with the Americans; Smith and Carlos were both pallbearers at Norman's 2006 funeral.
