Sputniks 5, 6, 9 & 10 carried these animals into space & most were recovered alive

The Soviet space program launched dozens of pups, as well as a guinea pig, a grey rabbit, two rats, 42 mice, and many, many flies. Other space programs have sent many additional critters, including multiple monkeys, tortoises, fish, newts, jellyfish, sea urchins, crickets, silkworms, and a French cat named Félicette.
