What kind of animal is the duck-billed platypus?

While the appearance and habits of the platypus are deceiving, the platypus is considered a mammal. Even though these strange animals lay reptilian-like eggs, have a duck bill, webbed feet, and contain venom potent enough to kill an animal the size of the dog, they are in fact a mammal.
