“Red Vineyard at Arles” is believed to be the only painting sold by which artist during his lifetime?

Answer Vincent van Gogh

In a letter Van Gogh wrote to fellow impressionist and friend Eugène Boch while working on the painting, "Ah well, I have to go to work in the vineyard, near Montmajour. It's all purplish yellow green under the blue sky, a beautiful colour motif." Boch's sister Anna ended up purchasing the painting in 1890... for 400 francs (approximately $1,500 today). Sixteen years later, she sold it for 10,000 francs. Today, the painting is considered among the most valuable in existence and would likely fetch over $100 million. Thankfully, it remains on display in Moscow's Pushkin Museum.
