Prior to the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the Americans set up a system to warn American Minutemen of any approaching British forces. A lantern signal warned the militias which way the British were coming: "One if by land, two if by sea." Who made the horse ride to warn the Minutemen that the British were approaching "by sea"?

Answer Paul Revere

Legend has it that Revere shouted "the British are coming!" to warn the patriots that King George's troops were on the way. However, this is unlikely as the American colonists of the time, both patriot and loyalist, called themselves British. Regardless, his warnings gave the militiamen time to prepare for the first shots of the Revolutionary War.
