In Philippians, Paul promises to send Epaphroditus, who apparently worked as a messenger of his letters. What had happened to Epaphroditus recently that showed his determination to serve?

Paul explains that Epaphroditus almost died from an illness. Without the kind of medicine we have now, it means he had to rest and fight the illness himself. Paul probably suspected Epaphroditus wouldn't announce this to his hometown, so he speaks of it in his letter.
