Goosebumps - or cutis anserine - are a strange vestigial feature of human beings. Arising when the pilomotor reflex is triggered, goosebumps are triggered when the tiny muscle at the base of a hair follicle contracts, pulling every hair upright. This was originally used by birds and mammals to keep warm, or to puff up, thereby discouraging predators from attacking.
