Between 1988 and 1992 Joe Montana and Steve Young were in a quarterback controversy in San Francisco. In 1988 they played in a two quarterback system, but after most of that season went by, coach Joe Walsh settled on Montana. After injury kept Montana out for much of 1991 and 1992, Walsh went with Young, and Montana was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs.
