Once a colony of this country, who controlled Algeria at the start of WWII?

Algeria wasn't viewed as a French colony during WWII, but as France, itself. Having been colonized in 1830, Algeria was made a part of France via the French Constitution of 1848. Being as such, it was the epicenter of French power in North Africa.
