Oh, wow – is that the Colosseum? In what century was this great Roman masterpiece built?
Answer 1st century
As one of the earliest iconic architectural masterpieces still standing, the Colosseum was built in the 1st century, from 70 to 72 A.D. Opposite the Roman Forum, the impressive amphitheater was commissioned by Emperor Vespasian as a way to "give back" to the people of Rome. It seems he knew just what they wanted: bloody combat between gladiators and wild animals that became a national pastime.
