Of the 102 Mayflower passengers who made it to the New World, how many survived the first year?
Answer 46
Despite the horrific nature of their two-month passage across rough Atlantic seas, only one person aboard the Mayflower died during the journey. It was after they reached the New World that their troubles truly began. Due to a departure delay, the Pilgrims didn't arrive until late November. With no shelter yet built, they were forced to spend the winter living aboard the ship, where scurvy and other diseases were rampant. Only 53 survived the winter. Women suffered disproportionately: of the 19 women aboard Mayflower, only five remained in the spring.
