Never intended as a fashion statement, wooden clogs - known as klompen in the Netherlands - were originally invented for what purpose?
Answer To keep them from rotting
There are many types of clogs these days, and they are staples of various cultures. The Oxford English Dictionary defines a clog as a "thick piece of wood", or a "wooden soled overshoe" and sometimes as a "shoe with a thick wooden sole". Because leather rots easily in places that are boggy and marshy, wood was used in the original design of clogs.
