Originally known as Hi-Catoctin, Camp David was built by the WPA in 1938 as a recreational retreat for government employees. In 1942, FDR claimed it for POTUS and renamed it Shangri-La. Presidents have used the camp ever since, for both personal enjoyment and a comfortable venue for delicate diplomatic talks.
