Marie - or Madame - Curie was the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize. In 1903, she won in Physics for her pioneering work on establishing the idea of "radioactivity" - a word she invented. She also received the 1911 Nobel Prize for discovering the elements polonium and radium, which she isolated using methods she developed.
