It evolved from being a Tempest trim upgrade to becoming a distinct model. A GTO package that could be added to the Tempest in 1964 was eventually separated out as the Pontiac GTO muscle car. In 1970, the GT-37 package was unveiled. It was superseded by the smaller Pontiac Grand Am, which was produced over the course of five generations in the 1960s and 1970s. The name was revived for a badge-engineered Daewoo LeMans produced by Daewoo in South Korea from 1988 to 1993.
