The American Staffordshire Terrier is the breed that's most commonly called a "Pit Bull". The term was first used in 1927 to describe this breed. Whether its their nature or just because they're been bred to fight, pit bull–type dogs have a controversial reputation as pets around the world, and some jurisdictions have bans on them.
