Shoko Asahara and his cult Aum Shinrikyo ("Supreme Truth") released sarin gas on five crowded morning rush-hour subway trains, killing 13 and causing thousands more to be ill. The Japanese government was specifically targeted, as the attack was led on Kasumigaseki station, near where the government offices were situated. Asahara was executed in 2018 for the part he played in the attack.
