Many know that the French aided the Americans in their Revolution, but afterward, the Americans and the French butted heads when the new nation wouldn't pay back their debts. What is this conflict called?
Answer Quasi War
The U.S. was indebted to the French for their support, both militarily and financially, during the Revolutionary War. As they were a new country, they began to pay back their debts in small doses but stopped their payments once the French Revolution took out the French monarchy. Their justification was that their debt was to the monarchy, and now it was no more. In retaliation, a Quasi War ensued and lasted two years, with the frenemies battling it out throughout the Caribbean and the Atlantic. It ended with the Convention of 1800, which returned captured ships to America while the U.S. agreed to pay back $20 million in damages.
