Built along the canal's narrowest point, its oldest bridge is the Rialto Bridge, which was once the only place you could cross the canal on foot. The bridge links San Marco with San Polo, and is related to the Bridge of Sighs in that its architect, Antonio da Ponte, was the uncle of the its architect Antonio Contino.
