Luke trained Kylo (a.k.a. Ben Solo) at the new Jedi Academy. Fearing Ben might turn to the Dark Side, Luke nearly killed his nephew in his sleep, causing Ben to react in defense, collapsing the building and massacring many of the students. In reality, this sealed Ben's fate. But Luke tells Rey initially that Snoke had turned Ben evil and attacked him.
