At a whopping $13 per month (about $200 in today's money), a white Union soldier was scraping by. Even worse, black soldiers made half that in the beginning. The measly $7 per month was later upped by Congress in 1864, but black soldiers only topped out at $11 per month, still less than their white counterparts.
