Let's start with the basics. It's common knowledge that the power output of a car engine is measured in horsepower. But which famous scientist invented that term?
Answer James Watt
It's not a surprise that the unit for measuring the power output of an engine was invented by a man whose last name represents power in physics. James Watt coined the term in the late 18th century after observing horses lifting coal out of a coal mine with the help of a block and tackle. According to him, 1 horsepower is equal to a horse being able to lift 330 pounds of coal 100 feet in 1 minute.
