Austrians love scaring the bejesus out of children around the holidays. Krampus is a living nightmare, who disperses the ghosts of winter and chases after children, poking them with sticks. He also joins Santa as his "little helper," beating children or, worse, carrying them back to his lair in a sack to eat them.
