Once a journalist, Hemingway's economical writing style emerged from what he called the "iceberg theory" – with little at the surface and lots unseen going on beneath. Hemingway was famous for more than his writing. He was a notorious sportsman who lived an adventurous life worth writing about. Unsurprisingly, his work – which includes greats such as For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Sun Also Rises, and Farewell to Arms – earned him the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954.
