Just like Alabama, Louisiana chose the black bear - or Ursas Americanus - as its state mammal in 1992. How do black bears native to Louisiana compare to their northern cousins?
Answer They're smaller
Black bears, like many other animals, follow Bergmann's Rule, which states that animals of the same species that live further north are bigger than their counterparts in the south. There are more than 15 subspecies of black bear, including the Louisiana Black Bear, which is smaller and has a narrower snout than other black bears.
