The full abbreviation NASDAQ stands for National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations. It's a mouthful, which is why everyone just says NASDAQ. As described on the website Investopedia, NASDAQ was designed "to enable investors to trade securities on a computerized, speedy and transparent system, and commenced operations on February 8, 1971".
