The School of Athens (1509-10), considered a masterpiece of the High Renaissance, depicts the full pantheon of ancient Greek philosophers — as well as a wee selfie of the artist himself. Who painted this fresco?
Answer Raphael
Together with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (known as Raphael) (1483-1520) is one of the Big Three masters of the High Renaissance period. Although lasting only forty years, the High Renaissance was a period of explosive artistic productivity that also included Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel, just down the hall from Raphael's famous fresco.
