The Bell Jar is based on author Sylvia Plath's real-life guest editorship at Mademoiselle. Like her main character, Esther, Plath suffered from clinical depression and suicidal thoughts, for which she was hospitalized and received electroshock therapy. Plath lost her fight with depression and died by suicide at the age of 30.
