Is becoming an HVAC apprentice mandatory before becoming an HVAC technician?

It is highly recommended that you work as an apprentice for several years before working on your own, but technically it is not mandatory. If you acquire the skills another way and have all the necessary knowledge, you could skip being an apprentice.
