At first, the Sorting Hat wanted to put Harry into Slytherin, not Gryffindor. This decision was based on the iconic, lightning-shaped scar Harry has on his forehead; the Sorting Hat thought his close association with Voldemort meant Harry most certainly belonged in Slytherin.
