Inspired by a conversation between songwriter Mack Rice and drummer Calvin Shields, the 1965 rhythm and blues hit "Mustang Sally" obviously brought a great deal of attention to the Ford Mustang. However, the idea for this song was sparked by another car entirely. Which one?
Answer Lincoln Continental
As singer Della Reese was considering buying Calvin Shields a Lincoln Continental for his birthday, Mack Rice and other band members poked fun at him for the potential gift. Shields replied that he would rather a new Ford Mustang, which prompted Rice to write a song about a woman who only wanted to ride around in her new car.
