In which decade did India win independence from Britain?

Answer 1940s

After nearly a century of colonial rule, India gained its independence from Britain in August of 1947. The movement was led by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, an Indian lawyer and nonviolent political activist. But the sweetness of victory was tainted by Britain's decision to partition the region into (largely Hindu) India and (largely Muslim) Pakistan. Ghandi once again engaged in extreme fasts to protest the religious violence that ensued. In 1948, he was shot to death by a Hindu nationalist.
