In which decade did a massive earthquake rock San Francisco, killing thousands and leaving half of the city's population homeless?
Answer 1900s
The 7.9 magnitude quake that occurred off the coast of San Francisco early in the morning of April 18, 1906 lasted just one minute but instantly caused devastating damage. Far worse than the quake, however, were the ensuing fires. With water mains broken (as well as a fire chief who perished in the quake), firefighting efforts were severely hampered. The fires burned for days and flattened 500 square blocks (amounting to 80% of the city at the time). This extraordinary photo shows both the rubble of houses torn apart by the shaking and the billowing smoke of the approaching fire.
