In what country did the Hot Dog originate?

Legend has it that the frankfurter was developed in the city of Frankfurt, Germany in 1487, five years before Christopher Columbus set sail for the new world. Whether or not this legend is true, the frankfurter sausage, known today as the hot dog, does have its origins in Germany.
