In 1997, the Arizona State men's basketball team became yet another in a long line of college basketball programs with players found guilty of point shaving. What is point shaving?

Answer Making sure your team doesn't cover the spread

In the simplest terms, point shaving is when a player or players deliberately make mistakes in order to guarantee their team doesn't cover the published point spread that gamblers use in order to place bets. A player who's shaving points isn't necessarily trying to make his or her team lose the game; he or she is just trying to influence the outcome — usually so he or she can collect a fat paycheck from the gamblers being helped.
