Ted Kaczynski was labeled the "Unabomber" because he targeted universities and airlines. The FBI used the acronym UNABOM to refer to his case. It was the media who turned that into "unabomber". The publication of his manifesto eventually led to a tip from Kaczynski's brother, who was familiar with his style of writing.
