In 1986, Cameroon's Lake Nyos experienced a limnic eruption, killing more than 1,700 people via the release of what gas?
Answer Carbon Dioxide
Limnic eruptions occur when a large amount of carbon dioxide that has built up under a lake suddenly erupts, creating a massive gas cloud. At Cameroon's Lake Nyos, that gas cloud went on to suffocate more than 1,700 people and hundreds of animals in the area. Luckily, limnic eruptions are extremely rare, with only two recorded in modern history, the other also occurring in Cameroon at nearby Lake Monoun in 1984.
