On August 24, 1542, Francisco de Orellana began one of the most improbably successful voyages in South American history, becomign the first European to sail the length of the Amazon River. In addition to his navigational accomplishments, Orellana also founded the city of Guayaquil, which today is the largest city in Ecuador.
