If you're an animal lover, you might want to live somewhere other than Indiana. The only creature recognized by that state as a symbol is not a mammal, but what bird? (Hint: it's the state bird of 6 other states).
Answer Northern Cardinal
The Northern Cardinal was designated as the state bird of Indiana all the way back in 1933. Some of the common mammals in Indiana are the striped skunk, the raccoon, the coyote and the muskrat. None of them were good enough to be called a "state mammal."
