The purchase nearly doubled the size of the United States. Bargain, right? Well, the transaction did come with one slight caveat: France didn't actually 'control' the vast majority of the territory — Native Americans did. What the U.S. effectively bought was France's agreement to not interfere as American continued to manifest its destiny westward.
