"I didn't question my decision. That's why I could do it for 16 years.” Known as "the Iron Lady of Manipur," who is this social activist who drove the world's longest hunger strike?
Answer Irom Sharmila
In protest against the Armed Forces Act, which allowed security forces the power to search properties without a warrant, arrest people, and use deadly force, Irom Chanu Sharmila began her fasting protest in 2000 but was nasally force-fed in jail. Her hunger strike ended in 2016. Sharmila was voted India's top woman icon on International Women's Day in 2014 and was declared a "prisoner of conscience" by Amnesty International.
