I consider the lean-to primarily a recreational shelter more than a survival shelter. Why?

Answer Because that big opening to one side leaves you exposed and vulnerable to weather

I know that sometimes, and in a pinch, a Lean-to is a great shelter, but I have spent one too many nights freezing because I was not protected from winds and rain on one side and making it bigger or having its 'back to the wind' did not make any difference at all. They're probably fine for hunting and if you have a good sleeping bag, but without that advantage, its a very cold and exposed shelter. Don't forget that winds can change and rain can blow sideways.
