How do you use a backer rod in regards to cracks in your driveway?

The purpose of a backer rod is to place it into cracks deeper than 1/2". This allows you to use less filler. Another product that some people use is sand, however if the crack expands the sand can sink deeper into the crack and not be able to support any sealant placed on top.
