How did the nightstick get its name?
Answer Because there were separate sticks for night and day.
Police officers in New York City at one time used two different types of truncheons, or batons, depending on the time of day. The ones used during daylight were a mere 11 inches long and called day-sticks. In contrast, the one used after dark, or the night-stick, was more than double that at 26 inches as they thought it could better help them keep their distance from their perpetrators.
