How did Nikki and Paulo die on Lost?

Nikki and Paulo were some of the most hated characters to ever appear on Lost. They were initially background characters who came to the forefront in season 3, but audience reception was almost universally negative. As a result, ABC decided to kill them off. NIkki paralyzes Paulo with a venomous spider, only to attract more spiders which bite and paralyze her. Mistaken for dead, the couple are then buried alive by Sawyer and Hurley - a pleasant result for haters of the despised characters.
